January 1, 1954

The Lions from East Texas State brought a 29-game winning streak into the contest, including the 1953 Tangerine Bowl, only to have it stopped with a tie against Arkansas State.

The Lions rallied from a 7-0 deficit late in the fourth quarter to even the score on a 20-yard TD run by Billy Ray Norris, keeping their unbeaten streak alive. Arkansas State intercepted a pass on the Indian 25-yard line late in the game, but fumbled the ball before they could muster a game-winning score before a then-record crowd.
